What You Need To Know About the Sample Collection and Analysis of Carbonyls (i.e., Formaldehyde) in Air

Tuesday, November 13, 2018 10:00am - 11:00am EST
Host: AIHA
By: Gary Oishi, R&D Chemist, Air Monitoring Group, MilliporeSigma

Carbonyls, such as formaldehyde, are ubiquitous and can be found in both outdoor and indoor environments including workplaces, schools, homes, and public buildings. The need to collect air samples continues to be an important task for those in the environmental and industrial hygiene fields, and for scientists who conduct product emission testing.

2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine (2,4-DNPH) reagent-coated media is the most popular media for carbonyl air sampling. This webinar will teach you about the different types of sampling media currently available for both active and passive air sampling.

Topics for collecting the air samples:

  • how to choose the correct sampling media for your application
  • how to properly connect the sampling media to an air sampling pump and calibrate the sampling flow rate
  • what sampling media can be used for passive sampling
  • why it’s important for proper storage of the sample media before and after sampling
  • how ozone scrubbers can be used to prevent degradation of your samples while sampling

Topics for analysis of the air samples:

  • how the different sampling media is prepared for analysis in the laboratory
  • how specific sampling media can now be automated for online desorption and analysis
